What to do in Boulder, Colorado

As you probably already know, Eldorado Natural Spring Water’s artesian springs are nestled in the cozy mountain town of Eldorado Springs. Located just a stone’s throw away from Boulder, our tiny hometown actually has lots to do. Come on down for a weekend and enjoy a few of the following world class attractions Eldorado Springs has to offer!

Scenic Attractions. Eldorado Springs is home to the stunning Eldorado Canyon State Park. With 12 total miles of hiking and various trails to explore, you’re sure to find some breathtaking views. One of our favorite things to do is pack a picnic and enjoy a sunny day beneath a tree.

Wildlife. Because Eldorado Springs is still very much untouched by man, spotting wildlife is almost an everyday occurrence for us! Bring along the binoculars and keep an eye out for mule deer, mountain lions, foxes, black bear, golden eagles, and an array of bat species.

Adventure Sports. If adrenaline is your thing, Eldorado Springs is the perfect weekend getaway for you! Eldorado Canyon offers over 500 of the country’s finest rock climbing trails. With names like Cloud Nine and Nightmare Block, the routes will challenge even the most advanced climbers! If you find yourself a little wary of heights, there’s plenty of mountain biking, snowshoeing and fishing to be enjoyed too! Watching those crazy climbers is plenty of entertainment in itself as well!

Eldorado Swimming Pool. Our swimming pool is a little piece of history! In operation since 1905, it has been a hotspot for family getaways and even celebrities ever since opening. It is fed directly by a constant flow from the artesian spring and has such a deep blue hue, some have thought that the water is artificially colored! Come visit what the Denver Post calls one of Colorado’s best pools in and around Denver.

The Importance of Electrolytes and Hydration at High Altitude

 Electrolytes at High Altitude

Electrolytes and hydration are an important aspect of your overall health. To get an better start understanding electrolytes, we will begin to explore them in the context of high altitude. For athletes—and especially high-altitude athletes—electrolyte balance is critical to maintain optimal athletic performance and safety. You need to be feeling your best on that fourteener (mountain-person parlance for "14,000-foot mountain")

A critical component up in high country is monitoring your electrolyte balance, as it helps you combat altitude sickness and nausea.  Electrolytes aren't just salt. They are comprised of Sodium, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Chloride, Bicarbonate, and Hydrogen phosphate (what we sweat out!).  In order to replenish these important minerals effectively, I suggest drinking natural spring water (as opposed to electrolyte drink mixes) and consuming salt stick salt tabs, which have all the electrolytes at the ratio you need.

In addition, ingest one 300 mg salt tab (SaltStick brand is good) an hour with some solid food. The food you consume naturally contains sodium, which assists in replenishing your important minerals. When mixed with the salt stick, consuming one half of a carbohydrate energy gel packet every hour with a good few chugs of water is a good option as well.

Weather and nighttime conditions are another story and may alter the need for salt tabs. For example, when it's really cold, your body doesn't require as much, so you could take a tab every two hours.  Be mindful to not eat high sodium foods during this process, though. Too much beef jerky or salted nuts can throw your balance off. Instead, opt for low-sodium or no-sodium options to help keep a healthy medium.

Typically, you should aim to drink 24–28 ounces of water every hour, monitoring your hydration and electrolyte levels by observing your urine. Voiding light yellow urine every hour or two would be considered healthy.  If your urine is a deeper yellow and you aren't going very often, then you need to drink more natural spring water. If your urine is clearer and you are going a lot, then you likely need more electrolytes and should consider backing off of the water for a bit.  Again, take into consideration the conditions—if it's a warm day, you may need to increase both.

My final tip is to suggest that you eat early in your activity and eat and drink often (every 15 minutes!).   Go prepared with healthy items suitable for performance and never forget to hydrate!

Do You Buy Local?

 buying local

In recent years, there has been a bit of backlash against the massive all-you-can-buy, American-conglomerate, big-box superstores. Places where you can literally buy a fifty-pound bag of tater tots and stock up on nine hundred rolls of toilet paper. Very low prices, huge quantities, and (generally speaking) mediocre-quality merchandise are all the norm. With this trend, we have witnessed the construction of megastores with parking lots the size of Sports Authority Field and the largest selection of goods you can imagine.

Local Economic Effects

Along with mediocre quality, we have witnessed unfortunate economic effects from the ubiquitous superstores. The destruction of Main Street is one sad result of huge chains. Mom-and-pop shops are unable to compete on price with these behemoths, which forces them to shut their doors. Furthermore, until recently, local merchants were forced to charge sales tax while online giants, like Amazon, did not.

Over the past decade, a major movement has gained substantial momentum in which people have been beating the drum to buy local. These consumers stress the importance of supporting local businesses, which in turn support the local community by providing jobs, among other benefits. The argument is that you may pay a bit more, but this money is being funneled right back to you in a tight local ecosystem. Think of this money being put into your neighbor's pocket rather than some far away unknown pocket. According to the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, for every dollar spent at a local establishment, forty-five cents recirculates the local economy, versus only fourteen cents from each dollar spent at a big box store.

Additional Benefits of Locally Owned Businesses

Consumers benefit by knowing more about the proprietors behind a product or service. Local business merchants tend to be longtime local residents with deep roots in the community, which results in piece of mind, knowing (for instance) that food was produced locally and local farmers are benefiting.

A great example of this is the Boulder Farmers Market, which is ranked the best farmers market in the United States. The New Economics Foundation, an economic independent think-tank, compared what happens when people buy produce at a supermarket versus a local farmer's market or community supported agriculture (CSA) program. The researchers found that twice the money stayed in the community when people bought locally.

Local businesses also contribute substantially to local tax coffers. This assists schools,  parks, and other projects to be completed to benefit local citizens.

How to Support Your Community by "Buying Local"

Thankfully, these days shoppers have a plethora of options. Be it from a local farmers market or from a special "buy local" section of a large chain, consumers can almost always purchase local goods and services. In fact, even when shopping online,  consumers can now can find sections devoted just to local wares and services.

As a locally owned and operated company, we at Eldorado Natural Spring Water believe it is important to support local businesses. We use local vendors and suppliers whenever and however we can, we hire locally almost exclusively, and we are committed to continually giving back to the community that we love.

Because our water comes from a natural source right here in Colorado, you just can't get much more local than we are here at Eldorado Natural Spring Water. You will not only find our water in many local retail stores, but, if you are local to Colorado, you can have it delivered to your home or office, or even use our self-service facility near our pool in Eldorado Springs, CO.
