Reverse osmosis is a method of purifying water. A reverse osmosis system forces water through a semi-permeable membrane to remove unwanted particles—all the way down to the molecular level—from water.

Reverse osmosis water filters can be used to purify anything from contaminated water to tap water. In doing so, they remove soluble impurities in water, converting it into safe drinking water.

In many areas of the world, reverse osmosis is used to create purified water from seawater, removing the salt and other materials.

Where Is Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration Used?

People and organizations can use reverse osmosis filters and systems in any setting where they want to remove contaminates. That can include a wide variety of manufacturing processes as well as simply providing filtered water to employees.

Reverse osmosis drinking water can be produced in homes, too, using what are referred to as whole-house reverse osmosis systems. They filter water when it first comes into the house and move it into a storage tank. The purified water is then pulled from this tank and flows to all the taps.

Some might consider installing a reverse osmosis home system if they live in an area where the municipal water source contains a high level of contaminants. That way, you get cleaner, safer water for drinking and cooking.

Is Reverse Osmosis Water Better Than Other Water?

Do reverse osmosis systems for homes create “better” water? That depends on your perspective. As noted above, one of the uses of reverse osmosis is to remove harmful contaminants from drinking water. Looking at reverse osmosis water that way, it certainly is healthier than water containing contaminants!

For example, many consumers wonder, “Does reverse osmosis remove added fluoride from tap water?” The answer is, “Yes, it does.” For people concerned about water fluoridation, a reverse osmosis water filtration system can remove 80% to 90% of the fluoride, by some estimates. That figure varies based on the quality of the filtering membrane, but in any event, a significant percentage of fluoride is removed.

Of course, you can’t “program” osmosis systems to remove only certain things. Consequently, they also remove certain beneficial minerals and electrolytes from drinking water. And in doing so, they modify the water’s flavor profile.

For this reason, many Colorado businesses and homeowners take a two-pronged approach to water quality. First, they implement a reverse osmosis system to improve the quality of their tap water, for use for manufacturing, cooking and cleaning. That way, workers or family members aren’t exposed to any contaminants. And for drinking purposes, they supply Eldorado Natural Spring Water. It doesn’t have contaminants, but it DOES have minerals and electrolytes that the body needs to function correctly. Plus, our water has award-winning taste.

And that’s not just our opinion. Water-tasting experts at competitions worldwide rank Eldorado Natural Spring Water among the best they’ve ever sampled, time and again.
