Does Drinking Water Affect Your Weight?

Increasing your water consumption is a component of certain weight loss programs. And while the “formulas” of diets aren’t always science-based, studies suggest drinking more water in a day may help you achieve your weight loss goals.

How Does Water Affect Weight?

Researchers believe that consuming more water per day than you normally do can help you lose weight in a few ways. First, water takes up space in your digestive system. If you drink 16 ounces or so of water approximately 30 minutes before a meal, you may get full faster and consequently consume fewer calories.

Studies also suggest that drinking approximately 68 ounces of water a day increases your body’s energy expenditure by 20 to 25 calories. That’s not a large amount, but if you burn those extra calories consistently, they can add up over time.

In addition, it’s common for people to not consume enough water. Upping your intake and staying properly hydrated throughout the day may increase your energy level, which can make it more likely that you’ll stick to an exercise program, make wise diet choices, etc.

What’s the Right Amount of Water Per Day?

If you’re wondering, “How much water should I be drinking daily?” keep in mind that water is the primary chemical component in your body, and makes up approximately 60% of your weight. So, it’s not surprising that the short answer to that question is, “A lot!”

The long answer is that the amount of water per day that’s right for you will depend on several factors. They include your overall health, activity level, weight and the environment where you live.

But as a rule of thumb, the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine recommends that men consume 125 ounces of water daily and women 91 ounces. Keep in mind that you get water from sources other than a glass of water. It’s in the food you eat, other beverages, etc.

But, again, most people don’t get enough fluids, so adding one glass of water (or two, or three…) to your daily water intake is probably a good idea.

Understanding Fluid Retention and Water Weight

While water consumption is a good thing, water retention typically isn’t. Certain conditions can cause the body to retain more water than it should. Standing or sitting too long, having a high-sodium diet, heart failure, menstrual cycle changes, kidney disease, and certain medications are just a few of them.

If you have a problem with excess water weight, you still need to consume water, as it’s essential to your health. But you should talk with your doctor about how much water in a day is right for you and how to go about losing water weight if that’s something they recommend.

Enjoy the Health Benefits of Water

All things considered, most healthy people should consume more water than they currently do, including those trying to lose weight. Water helps your body remove waste, lubricates your joints, supports your tissues, and helps you maintain a normal body temperature, among other benefits.
