Lately, we've been receiving a lot of questions regarding fluoride. What is it? How much is safe? How does it work? Unfortunately, your concern is definitely justified. Let's start at the beginning of fluoridation.
What is Flouride?
Fluoride is an ionic compound derived from the element Fluorine. Fluoride is found naturally in many soils, waters, rocks, and foods at levels of about .3 ppm (parts per million or 1 milligram per liter) or lower. The idea of adding fluoride to tap-water was first born after scientists discovered that it could help reduce tooth decay amongst the population. They found that it actually bound to tooth enamel, making the tooth more resistant to acid erosion and, through a process called remineralization, repairs previous damage.
A Little Pushback
Sounds great, right? Well, after it was introduced into the country's tap water, controversy arose. Naturally, people didn't like the idea of being mass-medicated, claiming consuming the fluoride was against their knowledge and that the government should need consent. While the opposing side claimed it was a huge accomplishment and that the fluoride efforts would reduce cavities and decay amongst those unable to finance proper dental care.
What's The Latest?
The debate continues to wage on as anti-fluoridation groups attempt to gather more studies to disprove the positive effects of fluoride. To the government's dismay, they've actually been quite successful. A group of Harvard scientists found that their studies supported, "The possibility of adverse effects of fluoride exposures on children's neurodevelopment." In laymen's terms, it lowers their IQ! Not to mention the known facts about fluoride and other studies have also found that excess fluoride consumption can lead to bone disease and tooth discoloration.
How Eldorado Stacks Up
Long story short, yes, fluoride does help with tooth decay and cavity prevention. There are also different types of fluoride. But how much is too much? Our country's water system is a massive, winding maze of pipes and plumbing. It's hard to know if the measurements are exact and just how much fluoride you're getting. With Eldorado Natural Spring Water, you can feel confident in our fluoride levels and we welcome you to continually check our water analysis page which is proudly displayed on our website. While much investigation still surrounds the subject of public fluoridation, we at Eldorado choose not to take any chances when it comes to our and our loved ones' well-being.
Because water is so important to our health, we are dedicated to staying current with the latest education surrounding water. Stay up-to-date with us and subscribe to our blog!
